Keppel to Pancake What?!!

Dinghy fixed and off to Great Keppel Island for a couple of days. Awesome beach walk and trying to fish up the estuary. Caught a little aquarium fish that went back in, but beautiful clear waters and a little chilly. First night we spent at GK and then moved over to Humpy Island because we knew that we would have to start heading back. The winds were not going to be great so trying to get a head start. Ended up leaving Humpy at first light and headed towards Mast Head Island. A part of the Great Barrier Reef.  Weather was perfect for a calm transition …. Had the fishing line out and caught a Spanish Mackerel.

There is one mooring buoy available at Mast Head and hopefully know one has it. Arrived to find the buoy almost where they said it would be. Glad we had the buoy because the wind picked up and with the swell it turned into a horrible night. Picked up at around 3am to go to Lady Musgrave and the wind and waves were making it almost impossible. If we had of continued, chances are the wind would have have made it difficult to get into the reef, so we changed course and settled on Pancake Creek … again. On the way in to Pancake we discovered something in the water…. an EPRIB! We managed to fish it out and then once we were inside Pancake another one goes floating by. Grabbed that one too! These are emergency beacons that when activated will alert Coast Guard to your position using GPS. Expensive items. Jacqui called the Coast Guard and found out that a boat had sunk out here, but no details. We will turn them in as soon as we can. I’m sure the owner will be glad to get them back.

Awww….too bad that you had to change course but it was challenging getting into Lady M in calm conditions, so would be a nightmare in wind and big swell – good call – safety first! Speaking of safety, hope the owners of the EPIRBS are all good ?
