Left Pancake Creek in the morning to start heading back to Brisbane. We wanted to be back by the 5th as we knew we needed a couple of days to organise the boat before catching our flight to Vancouver on the 8th morning. Made an overnight stop at Bundaberg and then off to Kingfisher Cove in the morning. Caught a Mack-Tuna leaving the Bundaberg anchorage. (not a great eating fish). Had some sushi and a grilled tuna the next day, but wouldn’t recommend it. From Kingfisher to Boonlye Point for another overnight anchor. We need to cross the most shallow part of the Great Sandy Straits at high tide so it required an overnight stay. Set the crab pots out with the fish head as bait. Next morning … NOTHING! Bait still intact. I think I have decided the Great Sandy Straits is not the place to catch crab!
Made it to Inskip Point and anchored for the night before attempting the Wide Bar crossing. Again a high tide adventure. Well, the crossing the next morning turned into one of the most hairy experiences. Pissing down rain, getting absolutely soaked and the waves coming over the boat in … (of course) waves … haha! Managed to survive that but needed to take a break after a couple of hours. Double Island Point offered enough protection so we ended up staying the night at anchor there. Next morning sunshine and calm weather made for an uneventful trip back to Brisbane. YEAH!! Anchored at dark outside of the marina so that we could moor the boat in the daylight. Had a little surprise the next morning as we found another boat in our berth!! Had to contact the marina after stopping at the fuel dock and they assigned us another berth. No problem, but if we had of decided to come into the marina the previous night as we had originally planned … then what?
Have spent the last couple of days eating everything in the fridge and getting the boat secured for the 4 weeks while we are in Vancouver. Played some squash! (what else) Looking forward to seeing everyone. Daughter getting married, AWESOME!! Playing some squash at Evergreen, if we can get someone to let us into the club and utilise the courts. 🙂
A little side note: took the train from Manly to Cleveland to pick up the car and this is something that perhaps is missing in Vancouver’s transit system … a toilet on the train. Perfect!
