Lizard Island

In August 1770, Captain Cook named Lizard Island because all he found here were lizards. He ventured to the top of the island to see if there was a way through the reef and into the ocean. From the top of the island you can see what Cook discovered and they made their way out through “Cook’s Passage” back into the Pacific Ocean.

Lizard is the furthest north that we are going and it is a beautiful spot. Clear waters to see the bottom, swimming off the back of the boat, barbecue on the beach, hike up to the top of the island, “Cooks Look”, we did that twice. Once on our own and then the second time with Graham and Cathy from Island Lady.

Every year at Lizard there is a marlin competition, to see who can catch a marlin that weighs over 1,000 pounds … a thousand pounds!!! Can you image a marlin that big? When we were in Newcastle they were in the midst of a marlin competition and the winning fish was 215 kilograms, which is around half that size. There was no marlins being caught at Lizard Island at that time, however we did enjoy a sunset at Marlin Bar.

Decided to head back to Port Douglas after 3 nights here as the winds were going to be in our favour. Our mast light had arrived and we needed to find someone to install it, either that or yours truly would be going up the mast. Thankfully we had a contact that suggested Sam. Very knowledgable and we managed to get the mast light working. Next day we rented a car and shot off to Cairns to pick up Shelley from the airport. Shelley will be with us for the next 3 weeks as we make our way back south.
